Heavily armed men suspected to be bandits have opened fire on hundreds of traders who were being escorted by the Nigerian Army on their way to Gwashi from Gurusu in Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
A resident of the area, Malam Aminu Gwashi, confirmed the incident to Danfako Media, saying the attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday October 11, 2026 when traders were given security cover to attend the Gwashi weekly market.
According to him, several people, including security personnel, were reportedly killed, while many others who sustained injuries were rushed to the Bukkuyum General Hospital for medical attention.
Gwashi and Bukkuyum communities have suffered a series of bandit attacks in recent times, a situation that has crippled commercial and economic activities in the area.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Nigerian Army nor the Zamfara State Police Command has issued an official statement on the incident.
