The Zamfara West Senatorial Zonal Football Competition concluded on a high note on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at the Zamfara State University Football Field, Talata Mafara, with Marafan Sokoto Football Club emerging champions after a 1-0 victory over New Generation FC of Anka Local Government Area.
Speaking shortly after the final, stakeholders commended the peaceful conduct and high level of talent displayed throughout the tournament, while also noting the urgent need for better sporting infrastructure in the area.
The Chairman and Secretary of the Talata Mafara Football Association have made a passionate appeal to Governor Dauda Lawal and Senator Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar, representing Zamfara West Senatorial District, to facilitate the immediate construction of a standard stadium in the area.
The appeal was made by Dr. Ibrahim Maihaja, Chairman of the Football Association, and his Secretary, Dr. Sani Yahaya, in an interview with Danfako Media Services Correspondent in Talata Mafara.

According to Dr. Sani Yahaya, Talata Mafara and its environs have over 100 football clubs that play regularly, yet operate without a single functional stadium. He described the situation as one that requires urgent government intervention.
“The existing stadium was converted into a market structure by the Local Government Chairman without providing an alternative field for the teeming youth of the area,” Dr. Yahaya stated.
The FA officials said the lack of a stadium is stalling talent development, exposing players to injury risks, and denying the youth a productive outlet. They urged Gov. Dauda Lawal and Sen. Yari to prioritize the project to restore the town’s sporting heritage and engage thousands of youths positively.
