Fresh information indicates that the death toll has now risen to 26 from 23, following a daylight attack by suspected bandits on farmlands in Sauna District, Talata Mafara Local Government Area, Zamfara State.
Earlier reports had confirmed at least 16 people killed, before the number was later updated to 23.
Residents say the victims were attacked while working on their farms. Many others are still reported missing.
According to a community source, the remains of all the victims have already been buried at the palace of the District Head. The mass burial was conducted earlier today, Thursday July 23, 2026.
The source added that the attackers arrived on multiple motorcycles and opened fire on anyone found in the farmlands.
Security authorities are yet to release an official statement as of the time of this report.
